The year 2022 is in full swing, and it’s time to remove the festive decorations from the city streets and squares, as well as the ten spruces that used to decorate the city. These are mostly donated to us by our townspeople.
If you also have a spruce growing on your land, with which you would like to brighten up the next festive decoration of the city, we invite you to contact the Municipality of Ljubljana or Javna razsvetljava d.d. at any time of the year. In doing so, provide the location of the spruce and your contact information, the best phone number where you can be reached. Based on your notification and prior agreement, we will conduct a joint inspection of the tree and assess its suitability. You can provide us with information until November 2022.
How is the selection of green beauties carried out?
In the fall, we select the spruces according to the location of the installation and inform the owners of the approximate cutting dates, which we coordinate with the installation of the rest of the holiday decorations.
Other factors such as weather conditions, spruce size and accessibility must also be taken into account, as the delivery and installation of larger spruce trees in the city center requires the closure of public areas or roads, the removal of vehicles that may obstruct access, emergency transport from the felling site to the location layouts and more.
“The size, growth of the spruce, the density of the branches and accessibility with vehicles for felling and removal are important for the selection of spruce itself. The most suitable are spruces that grow in gardens and are not in contact with other trees or buildings. To decorate the city, we need spruces of different shapes, from bushy to slender, of different heights,” explained Matjaž Podboršek, head of the lighting unit at Javni razsvetljavi d.d., which installs festive decorations in Ljubljana.
Benefits for spruce donors
And what are the advantages for spruce owners? First of all, satisfaction at the fact that by donating the tree, they improved the festive atmosphere in Ljubljana, made many citizens and visitors of the city happy, and ensured a professional and safe spruce felling. By donating the spruce, the owners also avoid the costs of felling and removal of waste branches.
After dismantling, all spruces are cut up and taken to a processing center, where they are properly recycled by the competent services.
A beautiful 15-meter tall and 3-ton spruce tree, which adorned Prešeren square at the end of last year and at the beginning of this year, was donated to us by a citizen from Murgel.
